Bill Cosby says you can keep monsters away by going under your covers; and we all know you can get completely rid of monsters in the closet by turning on the light. So in the one case we go into the dark and in the other we eliminate the dark.
It should be clear that at work we need to eliminate the dark and not retreat within it. The dark, in this case, is the unknown or our negative predictions of what may be coming next.
Turning on the light is easily translated into getting information, asking questions, separating fact from fiction…you get the idea.
Now once in a while in a work setting you shine light on something and IT IS A MONSTER…ahhhh! But you know down deep that it is not as bad as you had expected because you at least have a clearer picture of what you are dealing with.
So let’s reach right now for a flashlight, turn it on, aim it into that dark corner and…ahhhh! Oops, made a mistake, it’s only a vacuum cleaner with a shirt draped over it – nothing to be afraid of. |
