Do you think standing ovations should be reserved for walk-off home runs in baseball, gold-medal Olympic finishes or Broadway performances? If so, then few of us will ever receive one. But if you believe a standing ovation can be earned by helping your organization succeed, working with a team to achieve a goal, or teaching a child about the joy of reading, then many of you deserve one.
Here’s another question: Can one or two people give a standing ovation, or does it have to come from a large crowd? In my opinion, the size of the audience doesn’t matter, only the sincerity of the gesture.
Are you willing to get your seat off the seat, stand up and give a deserving someone a standing ovation? The next time you’re in a team meeting or at the dinner table and something special has happened, be the one to initiate a standing ovation. Sure, it may feel a little weird. But when you think about it there is something more weird… not showing appreciation to those who make our lives better and easier.
And who knows, if we give enough standing ovations, maybe we’ll get one. |
